Waitrose Parcel Returns Refined Retail Design
INTRO
MAKE designed a custom parcel returns unit for Waitrose, trialled across multiple stores.
Functional retail infrastructure that sits quietly within a premium brand environment, while remaining instantly findable and effortless to use.
-
A parcel returns point is, by function, utilitarian infrastructure. Waitrose needed it to read as neither utilitarian nor infrastructure. The unit had to be built into a custom wall opening and trialled across multiple stores, with an external form minimal and clean enough to feel architecturally sympathetic to a prestigious retail environment — without compromising on ease of use, mechanical reliability, or day-to-day durability.
Elevating a returns box to feel refined and elegant, while ensuring it remained easy to find visually and intuitive to operate, is a challenging design problem.
-
The external form was developed around minimal, architectural proportions, sympathetic to Waitrose’s brand environment rather than announcing itself as a piece of equipment. Custom RAL paint and HPL finishes were specified to meet the client’s exact brand guidelines.
Resolving the core contradiction of the brief — quiet presence versus confident usability — took genuine iteration rather than a single early idea. Multiple design directions were tested, including single and double chute configurations and central versus side-orientated screen interfaces, before arriving at the configuration that balanced both requirements successfully.
Mechanically, the chute was proportioned to accommodate the client’s specified parcel sizes while remaining light enough to open comfortably with one hand. It was dampened for a soft-close action, both for a premium feel and to protect fingers from accidental entrapment. Electronic locks allow operation via a digital UI device and straightforward parcel removal for staff, while an internal theft-preventing cowl and welded tubular frame ensure the unit withstands day-to-day retail use.

The finished unit resolves a brief that most approaches would have treated as a simple enclosure exercise, delivering a returns point that sits calmly within a premium retail environment while remaining immediately findable and effortless to operate. The unit was trialled successfully across multiple Waitrose stores, validating both the refined external design and the underlying mechanical reliability required for sustained daily use.

A piece of functional retail infrastructure elevated to feel like part of the store itself — proof that even the most utilitarian brief can be resolved without compromise, when brand, mechanics and user experience are considered together from the outset.
