Sentinel Automated Cradle Lock for Mobile Computers
INTRO
Sentinel is a rugged security device that retrofits to existing mobile computer cradles — providing automatic device locking on placement and PIN release, without modification to existing infrastructure.
-
Mobile computers in cradle mounted applications are vulnerable to opportunistic theft, particularly in shared-vehicle or multi-shift environments.
The client required a security device that could retrofit to existing cradle infrastructure without modification — providing automated locking that activates on device placement and releases only via an authorised user PIN.
The product had to withstand demanding industrial environments while accommodating multiple device models within a single hardware platform.
-
MAKE designed Sentinel hardware as a direct-attach security device that clamps over the top of existing device cradles. A telescopic clamp mechanism provides free movement when no device is present, automatically engaging and locking once a device is seated in the cradle below. This passive actuation approach means no step is added to the user workflow — the device is simply secured on placement.
Material selection was driven by the environmental demands of industrial deployment. The primary structure uses steel for rigidity and resistance to forced entry, with nylon 6 components used where dimensional tolerance and reduced weight are beneficial.
The telescopic clamp spans a defined range of devices, allowing a single Sentinel unit to accommodate multiple device models — reducing SKU complexity for operators managing mixed-device fleets.
-
Passive lock activation — engages automatically when device is placed in cradle
PIN release via the secured device — no additional hardware required
Telescopic clamp geometry accommodating multiple device widths from a single unit
Steel and nylon 6 construction for industrial environmental compliance
Retrofit compatibility — attaches to existing cradles without modification

Sentinel provides a practical, low-friction security solution for the shared logistics environment. By eliminating additional user steps and working with existing cradle infrastructure, adoption barriers are minimised.
The robust material specification ensures consistent performance across the product lifetime without maintenance requirements.
